SURF NOIR IN A GIANT EMPTY AUDITORIUM, the debut studio album by TCB, feels like the soundtrack to a forgotten noir film set under the blinding sun of Los Angeles. Mojave Desert woodshedding meets experimental California doom jazz across fifteen improvised tracks, as immersive as they are unsettling. Recorded live over three days at Goat Mountain Recording in Landers, California, SURF NOIR conjures a mood that’s both disorienting and hypnotic, like an unresolved dream. Todd Myers’ drumming oscillates between haunting cymbal work and heavy-hitting rhythms that propel each track headlong into dark reveries. On tenor saxophone, Cat Celebrezze creates intense, reverbed-out specters made of sound and fury. Blake Baxter’s bass drives the music with deep, unwavering subsonic power. Spidery, shadowy, and eerie, Doom Jazz goes from a slow churn to a rolling, raucous wave, like a night club’s badly behaved clientele. Occasionally, Baxter switches to guitar and Celebrezze takes over bass, bringing forth distorted, searching, fever-dreams, such as on Neil Hates This. Floating above the barfight fray that is Union Station Transference, Celebrezze’s quipping, squawking tenor feels as wisecracking as any shamus. For fans of experimental music, dark jazz, or anyone drawn to brooding, cinematic soundscapes, SURF NOIR is a must-listen.
